Lipofilling (also called fat grafting or fat transfer) is a cosmetic procedure where fat is taken from one part of your body (like your belly or thighs) and injected into another area to add volume, smoothness, or contour.
It’s a natural alternative to synthetic fillers or implants and is used for both aesthetic and reconstructive purposes.
How Lipofilling Works
Liposuction is performed to harvest fat from areas like:
Abdomen
Flanks (love handles)
Thighs
The fat is purified (filtered or spun in a centrifuge)
The purified fat is then injected into the target area with small cannulas
Common Areas Treated
Face: To fill in wrinkles, laugh lines, hollow cheeks, under-eyes, or temples
Breasts: For natural breast augmentation or post-surgery reconstruction
Buttocks: As part of a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
Hands: To reduce signs of aging
Scars or indentations: To smooth contour irregularities
Recovery
Mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort in both the donor and injection sites
Back to light activities in a few days to a week
Most swelling resolves in 2–4 weeks, full results in a few months
Important to Know
Some of the transferred fat may be absorbed by the body over time — typically around 30–50%
Results are long-lasting where the fat “takes”
Can be repeated for enhanced results
Natural look and feel since it’s your own tissue
No risk of allergic reaction or rejection
Lipofilling vs. Dermal Fillers
Feature Lipofilling (Fat Graft) Dermal Fillers (e.g., Juvederm)
Material used Your own fat Synthetic gel (e.g., hyaluronic acid)
Longevity Long-lasting, even permanent Temporary (6–18 months)
Cost per session Higher, but fewer sessions Lower, but may require more upkeep
Risk of rejection ❌ None (autologous) ✅ Rare but possible
